Barangaroo Pier Pavilion Competition

Plus Sydney recently took part in the Pier Pavilion Competition run by Infrastructure NSW.

Barangaroo is the site of many thresholds in Sydney’s ever-changing urban fabric. It lies at a crossroads in history, between the site’s past as indigenous hunting grounds, colonial shipping port, and future as a cultural, financial capital of the global community.

Located at a pivotal juncture of Wulugul Walk, a series of dualities emerge from the site. To the north, sandstone blocks curve around the restored headland reserve to honour a proud indigenous past. To the south, sleek towers of glass and steel celebrate business and commerce, reflections of Sydney’s urban ambitions as a fledgling global city.

It is a site between land and water, nature and built form. Amongst them, an opportunity arises. The Breach is a provocation of dualities. It becomes the interstitial space between elements; to be the breach in which the thresholds of interiority, exteriority, between water and land, land and air are crossed.
