Setting a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure with an ISCA rating of ‘Excellent’ and a Six Star rating from the Green Building Council – MIRRAT (Melbourne International RoRo (roll-on roll-off cargo) Automotive Terminal is a truly iconic Plus project. Open to the public this year as part of Open House Melbourne, MIRRAT was brought back into the limelight.
Minimal and modernist, there’s a simple and graphic quality to the design. Featuring a flat roof and large picture windows, the three levels are finely poised on slender columns. Given its location at Webb Dock West, Port Melbourne, and the need for unimpeded sight lines, there’s a sense of transparency both through and around this unique facility. The glass, concrete, steel and recycled concrete building creates a high-tech ‘industrial’ aesthetic yet still provides a comfortable and stimulating work environment for staff.
