Plus participated in the Design Excellence Competition for 2 Sorrell Street in Parramatta, establishing our vision for this site in this fast-changing part of the city.

The site is strategically located across the proposed civic link which will bring people to the future MAAS Powerhouse precinct on the Parramatta Riverfront. The proposal will create the backdrop for cultural events and will play a key role in establishing the future character of this place and Parramatta.

The building envelope is established by the solar access plane ensuring the southern riverbank is not overshadowed in mid-winter. The natural topography of the riverbank and its relationship to Sorrell Street creates a layered ground plane which will engage with the public domain activated through retail and commercial uses. The rich and natural landscaped character along the riverfront is conceptually extended into the build form creating three distinct forms over the podium.

Conceptually the build form is eroded by nature and the river to establish clearly legible building components which will form a sculptural composition within the available building envelope. A contrast in materiality, combined with strong recesses and the use of landscape expression strengthen this concept. The horizontal façade expression conceptually extends from the ground plane up the building onto the rooftop terraces. The fine grain of façade and horizontal layering creates a dynamic interplay of form whilst creating a dynamic composition of form which will be highly visible from the Parramatta waterfront.
