Drawing from the organic nature of Canberra’s mountainous surrounds, the design concept for Rydges Canberra was aptly entitled ‘trailblaze’. Playing with textures and details, the ground floor is transformed into an elegant space with an atmosphere befitting a world class hotel.
The scope encompassed the refurbishment of the common areas of the hotel including the reception, bar and dining areas, lounge, and conference rooms.
The vision was to deliver an interior space which had a sophisticated, masculine edge. Inspired by Canberra as a city of contrasts, a city nestled safely within the vast Australian landscape, raw stone meets polished edges and organic textures of rope and leather play to the natural aesthetic set alongside curved glass and metal mesh. Darker, intimate spaces are balanced by the light, earthy palette to resemble the organic elements found in nature.
The impressive scale of the floor plan allows hotel guests to follow a meandering path across the space, moving between large areas designed for congregation and smaller, intimate spaces offering a place for quiet reflection. Guests can meet at the impressive central bar or find solace in the privacy of a secluded booth. The conference rooms provide a boutique, professional space for a meeting of minds. Remarkable curved glass windows adorning the space affords guests the chance to enjoy the different quality of spaces as the daylight changes above the atrium.
The contemporary interpretation of a trailblaze is cleverly depicted with an organic banquette seating nestled under 25-year-old tree canopies. The elegant backdrop of metal mesh curtains layers drama and creates a luxurious atmosphere.
