Unlocking the potential of NewQuay by creating a 24-hour city.
The NewQuay precinct was Melbourne's first development to feature mixed-use, high-density towers outside the CBD. The $1 billion state-of-the-art Docklands masterplan was designed to reinvigorate the former industrial land surrounding Victoria Harbour.
Plus led the conceptual masterplanning in 1997 and has shaped the precinct into the thriving cultural, residential and business hub that it is today. Over the ensuing decade, Plus designed and delivered seven residential towers, 14 high-end townhouses, workspaces, restaurants and the public realm.
In collaboration with developer, MAB, the vision was to create a ’24-hour city’ combining living, work and entertainment. NewQuay was designed to be an extension of Melbourne's CBD, with restaurants, bars and retail outlets along the promenade. Referencing the CBD's iconic laneway structure, NewQuay has also been designed with a fine grain to allow for unexpected discoveries. Given both MAB directors' patronage of the arts, both art and sculpture pieces have been integrated throughout.
In addition to NewQuay's waterfront locale, it boasts over 4 hectares of green space. Central to the design is a self-irrigating park, which has been engineered to capture rainwater to then redistribute across the park independently.
The Plus masterplan received numerous awards including the RAIA (Victorian Chapter) Commercial Architecture Award in 2003, the Property Council Mixed Use Developments - Leaders in Excellence Award in 2004, and the API Excellence in Property Development Award also in 2004.
