A new home for the Midland Station, bringing it closer to the heart of the Midland Town Centre in Perth.

Plus Architecture was commissioned by lead consultant AECOM to provide a Project Definition Report (PDR) for the new Midland Station as part of METRONET’s initiative to transform the Midland city centre.

Midland Station was to be relocated so that it would be more fully integrated with the city centre, providing improved proximity to the Midland Gate Shopping Centre and Midland Health Campus.

Centred on a new location between Helena and Cale streets, Plus Architecture worked with AECOM to develop proposals for a modern rail and bus interchange. This development has enabled connection to the new Bellevue Train Depot while also promoting safe pedestrian access through the station precinct.

Plus Architecture’s scope also included collaboration with Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA)’s Operational consultant, key project stakeholders and the PTA Network and Infrastructure and Transperth Divisions to deliver an Option Analysis Study and Project Definition Report with architectural designs.

The PDR designs proposed short term car parking, a 14-bay bus interchange, multi-level car parking and pedestrian connections to the principal shared path network.

AECOM delivered all engineering disciplines, track alignment and traffic planning. Plus Architecture provided design coordination, station design and urban design integration strategies.

During the PDR program, four options were developed for pricing to ensure the identification of the best value in the location preferred by stakeholders. Plus Architecture also designed and compared underpass, overpass and level crossing arrangements, ensuring the safest arrangements were identified for feasibility assessment.  These studies also considered the operations of the Prospector, a train service connecting Perth to Kalgoorlie, as well as freight train lines which posed height clearance and accessibility challenges in the design of the pedestrian overpass.
