The brief for this competition was to deliver a landmark hotel building with design that was both eye-catching and maximized this narrow site.

Making the project more challenging was the two heritage buildings occupying the site, each with different ratings (one significant and one contributory). The design sought to activate the ground plane within the heritage buildings and create a sleek hotel above the street line.

The façade and podium of the hotel were set back in response to both Council and Heritage Requirements, letting the existing, classic buildings anchor the brave new design neatly into the narrow footprint.

Overall, the concept delivered was respectful of the past, embraced the nearby laneways, created connections and placed an inspiring building on the site to add to Melbourne’s already eclectic, varied city skyline.
