Refined elegance, with timeless appeal
Five on Florence provides a unique, boutique offering on the border of Teneriffe’s well-known waterfront precinct. Teneriffe is embedded with Brisbane’s architectural history, characterised by the heritage-listed woolstores and character homes that have defined Brisbane’s housing vernacular. Five on Florence reflects this rich context with a refined manor that doesn’t offer competition but instead highlights the beauty of the surrounding materiality and form.
The design maintains the existing industrial streetscape with a heavy brick building base inspired by the construction of the surrounding Woolstores. The brick base ensures a personable experience for both the street user and adjacent character housing along Chermside Street.
“The design seamlessly integrates contemporary living with Teneriffe’s rich architectural heritage,” says Danny Juric, Director at Plus Architecture. “It’s a project that enhances the streetscape while creating a refined, human-scale experience for the community.”
The tower takes the verticality of the corrugated roofing typically seen in the Brisbane vernacular and reinterprets these lines with a reflective fluted glazing. This allows the upper levels to seemingly disappear against the sky, reinforcing a more human scale, while the Woolstores continue to dominate the Teneriffe skyline.
With living areas oriented to the North East, Five on Florence’s frontage reflects the activity of adjacent developments and continues to express the verticality of the corrugated sheeting through the balustrades and fluted concrete. Greenery and landscaping complement the refined material palette, while large balconies and outdoor planters emphasise the subtropical design suited to Brisbane’s climate.
The interior realm of Five on Florence has been brought to life by international design house, BYculprit.
