As part of a competition, Plus were invited to submit a proposed design for a large commercial space in Essendon Fields. The design proposition was driven by the workspace and environment that the building would offer to its users. The outcome was to be unique, flexible, adaptive and light filled.
A key driver behind the proposed design was to produce a healthy and vibrant workspace for the building occupants. The building facades were configured to provide abundant natural daylight to the floor plates whilst reducing the glare for the building occupants and the solar thermal load onto the building envelope. Critical to this are the two large courtyard penetrations through the workplace floor plates. These allow for deep natural daylight penetration into the building with over 60% of the workspaces within 6 metres of a glazing line.
The inclusion of a Common was a central feature to the design. The Common was envisaged as the heart of the project, providing a place of relaxation and entertainment, education and collaboration. The space was configured to allow for a plethora of activities, both active and passive.
