Designed with a considered approach, delicately integrating within the site's heritage context.
Occupying a prominent central Melbourne site, this purpose-built student accommodation project pays homage to Melbourne's iconic Hoddle Grid, featuring a striking lattice-like façade. We designed 225 King Street to achieve a feeling of individuality among residences, the apartments have been delineated through the use of pronounced window frames.
The northern corner, selected for its abundant access to sunlight, is wrapped in distinctive metal mesh, with its perforated material allowing for both light filtration and privacy. The idea behind the juxtaposed grid structure and the mesh, was to create a soft transition, allowing for a more seamless connection to the neighbouring heritage building.
Break-out study spaces and double-height outdoor zones have been designated on various levels up the sunlit north-eastern corner, with larger communal areas found on the ground floor, podium and rooftop. Creating multiple outdoor spaces also provides the opportunity for vertical greening, with the intention for cascading plants to further integrate the building within its surroundings.
Within 225 King Street, our interiors evoke a sense of warmth, with a vibrant yet sophisticated palette inspiring creativity and respite.
Student health and wellness was also a pivotal consideration, which has been realised through a diverse offering of recreation facilities, including a gymnasium, landscaped gardens and a rooftop walking track.
