Future-focused aged care in WA

The new residential building at Royal Australian Air Force Association (RAAFA) Bull Creek Estate provides an engaging address for independent seniors living in Western Australia.

Named in recognition of the Short Stirling heavy bomber used in WWII, Stirling is a contemporary addition to an established neighbourhood of retirement living apartments and dwellings, as well as two residential care centres on site. Within easy walking distance to the local train station, its location supports an actively connected, community-oriented lifestyle.

Standing six-storeys tall, its streamlined built form is empathetic to its urban surroundings, creating a distinct sense of place. Terraced garden beds lined with native plants and integrated landscaping at the main entry creates a thriving, inviting atmosphere, encouraging communal interaction in shared green spaces around the building.

The independent living unit designs were developed in close collaboration with RAAFA’s team and after extensive engagement with residents of the Memorial Estate. With options for one, two and three bedroom units, all 63 apartments are designed to provide comfort, ease, abundance, and optimal accessibility for residents in advanced years. Where possible, living spaces are positioned to the corner of the floorplate, to offer a dual aspect and increased cross-ventilation through generous glazing. Perforated screens offer privacy along balconies while welcoming a connection to the outdoors, and passive dialogue with the streetscape.

This building is the first stage of the Plus Architecture-designed master plan for RAAFA's Air Force Memorial Estate (AFME) at Bull Creek in Perth's inner south suburbs.
